Hi there and welcome to my new blog “dunstitchin”!

This will be a quilting and patchwork blog where I intend to share my journey from beginner quilter to advancing to more interesting projects.

I was inspired to start by my aunt in Charlotte, North Carolina. I think that the mathematician in me is inspired  by the geometry of the piecing. Of course that doesn’t mean that I always get my measurements correct!

The perfectionist in me has had to learn to live with the creative uniqueness of minor mistakes. Of course, I have to rip very visible mistakes but it’s been very liberating to not stress over minor “mistakes” such as slightly off points.  Of course it would be a different story if I was making show quilts but for now I’m making quilts for fun, love and learning.

So far I’ve finished two lap quilts for myself and have done just over ten twin size quilts for friends and family. I’ve used patterns taught by the wonderful Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Company and some I’ve found in magazines. I started by using pre-cuts where the colour and pattern combinations are already selected as I don’t feel confident in choosing my own colour and pattern combinations yet.

So where to next?

I have so many ideas. They include learning to applique, trying a contemporary quilt, putting together colours from my fledgling but growing stash, learning celtic knot work.  I’m really keen to start to incorporate crochet and sashiko stitching into my quilts – maybe start a new fusion celtic style.  And of course free motion – I’m working through a course with the fabulous teacher, Leah Day, on Craftsy at the moment and I might just be brave enough to try on next quilt.

Would love to hear from anyone who’d like to join my journey.  And would love to get encouragement and suggestions from all fellow quilters out there.

Xxoo

Ann

  1. Ann,

So well done on having started this amazing journey. What’s that you said about a small but growing stash of fabric? It’s everywhere in our house! I should know, I’m your loving husband! I know how much you love this new endeavour so good luck, have fun.

    All love,

    A quilting widower…x
